Classic Constance (8days)
Lake Constance (Der Bodensee) - Switzerland, Germany & Austria
Lake Constance or Der Bodensee is one of Europe's most popular cycle routes. Passing through Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the cyclist is treated to a parade of historic buildings, vineyards and orchards. All of this with the picturesque backdrop of mountains and the lake.
On our cycle we visit some of the lakes more famous islands of Reichenau, Mainau and Lindau and gain an insight into this regions history and culture. Our cycle also gives us ample opportunity to enjoy the regions flora and fauna. From the gardens of Mainau Island to the Rhein Delta.
For those interested in the culinary delights, influenced by the countries surrounding the lake, the choice is endless. Enjoy the gentle sounds of the lake over a relaxing coffee or just gaze at the snow covered peaks of Switzerland.
This treat is truly a families dream. With easy terrain, cycle paths and reasonable distance it is an ideal escape for the entire family.
Outline Itinerary
| Day 1 |
Arrival in Konstanz |

Arrive in the city of Konstanz and the use day to explore the old town. In the evening we gather for dinner and our tours briefing.

| Day 2 |
Konstanz to Stein am Rhein (±20km) |

Due to is geographic location on Der Bodensee, Konstanz is ideal for exploring the islands and shoreline of the lake. During the first part of todays cycle we visit the Wollmatinger Ried Reserve with its extensive reed marshes and meadows filled with rare and beautiful flowers. Our first island stop is Reichenau Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 8th century, the monastry located on the island has witnessed may of the regions political and religious changes. We depart the island by ferry to the Höri Peninsular and the town of Gaienhofen, made famous by Noble prize winner Herman Hesse. Passing through the towns of Hemmenhofen and Öhningen we reach the Swiss border ad soon after our evening stop at Stein am Rhein. |
| Day 3 |
Stein am Rhein to Überlngen (±45km) |

Departing Stein am Rhein under the watchful gaze of Hohenklingen Castle, we cross to the island of Werd. The island houses a small franciscan monastry and community. We follow the Swiss shore past small fishing villages to Konstanz. We cycle through Konstanz to the garden island of Mainau. Spend some time exploring this botanical treasure before taking a ferry to the old Imperial town of Überlngen. This town was first fortified in 1180 and later formed an important stratigic location for the Hohenstaufen Emperors. |
| Day 4 |
Überlngen to Friedrichshafen (±40km) |

Our first stop today is the immaculate Birnau church, one of the finest examples of baroque architecture. Leaving the church we next visit the lakeside Pfahlhau Museum which consists of reconstructed stilt houses built in the way of the neolithic dwellers of Lake Constance. Continuing to the charming medieval city of Meersberg, we visit the 'old Castle', built my Merovingian kings. Leaving the city behind, we cycle through the wine growing villages of Immenstaad and Hagnau to the town of Friedrichshafen. Enjoy the hrbour front or visit the famous Zeppelin Museum. |
| Day 5 |
Friedrichshafen to Bregenz (±40km) |

Leaving Friedrichshafen we cycle through apple orchads until we arive in the Bavarian town of Lindau. The old town is located on the protected island. The new Harbour contains Bavarians only lighthouse and the characteristic Lion Sculpture. Once we leave the island we enter Austria and follow the lake shore to the overnight stop in Bregenz. |
| Day 6 |
Bregenz to Arbon (±35km) |

First settled by the Celts in the 5th century BC, Bregenz has a well preserved old town. Split into the Upper and Lower Towns, the oldest landmarks can be found in the Upper Town, while the famous lakeside stage can be found in the Lower Town. After the morning exploring Bregez we cycle to the Rhein Delta and follow the shore to the town of Arbon. Arbon provides a welcome stop in the form of the oldest bathing neaches in Switzerland. |
| Day 7 |
Arbon to Konstanz (±30km) |

Our final days cycle takes us through the Swiss apple growing canton of Thurgau. We pass through small, well kept villages, before again reaching Konstanz. |
